American teenager among the victims

Three people, including an American teenager, have been killed in an avalanche near the Swiss resort of Zermatt, police said on Tuesday.

The avalanche occurred on Monday afternoon on a mountainside near the village of Täsch. The victims were part of a group of five who were skiing off-piste when the avalanche struck.

The other two victims were a 55-year-old man from Switzerland and a 52-year-old woman from Germany.

The injured person, a 50-year-old man from Switzerland, was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

Police said the avalanche was caused by a combination of heavy snowfall and strong winds.

The avalanche risk in the area had been rated as "considerable" at the time of the incident.

Zermatt is a popular ski resort in the Swiss Alps. It is located near the Matterhorn, one of the most iconic mountains in the world.
